When the storm passes, the real work starts
Tampa Bay knows hurricanes. Even a storm that misses us sends surge, wind, and waves through our canals and across our bayfronts — and docks take the beating. After every major storm, the pattern is the same: decking peeled up like a sardine lid, rails snapped, pilings shifted or snapped, boat lifts twisted on their mounts, and debris piled against everything. It's overwhelming to look at. But it's also fixable, and we've done it many times.
The most important thing in the first days after a storm is stopping further damage. A partially collapsed dock left alone gets worse with every tide — sections tear free, pilings grind in their sockets, debris hammers what's left. Fast stabilization saves real money. That's why we offer emergency response after storms: we come out, shore up what's standing, secure what's loose, and stop the bleeding.
What storms do to docks
Wind is the headline, but water does most of the damage. Storm surge lifts docks off their pilings — literally floating the structure up and dropping it somewhere else — especially where deck height was marginal for the surge. Waves hammer pilings sideways, snapping them at the mudline or working them loose. Floating debris becomes a battering ram: docks, boats, and lumber from up the canal all become projectiles.
Then there's the aftermath damage people miss. Saltwater immersion of electrical systems. Sand and silt packed into places it shouldn't be. Pilings that look standing but shifted just enough to rack the whole frame. A dock can look "mostly okay" after a storm and still be structurally compromised — which is why a professional assessment matters before you start using it again.
Emergency response: stabilize first
When you call after a storm, our first visit is triage. We secure loose sections so they don't tear free and damage neighboring docks — because your loose decking becomes your neighbor's problem, and liability follows. We shore up partially collapsed sections to prevent progressive failure. We disconnect or make safe any damaged electrical. And we photograph everything, because documentation starts now.
We prioritize safety hazards first: docks blocking navigation channels, structures threatening to collapse onto seawalls or homes, live electrical in the water. Tell us what you're seeing when you call and we'll tell you honestly how urgent it is.
Assessment and the repair plan
Once things are stable, we do a full assessment — same thorough process as our dock inspections, plus storm-specific checks for surge uplift damage, shifted pilings, and hidden racking. You get a written report with photos: what's repairable, what needs replacement, and what the priorities are.
Then the repair plan, in phases that make sense. Phase one is making the dock safe and usable — structural repairs, secure decking, working access. Phase two is full restoration — cosmetics, accessories, lighting, and everything that makes it yours again. We also flag upgrades worth doing while we're rebuilding: if the storm exposed a design weakness, rebuilding it the same way is just scheduling the next failure. This is the time to build it stronger.
Working with your insurance
We're builders, not adjusters — but we've been through the insurance process with many clients and we know what carriers need. Thorough photo documentation from day one. Itemized written estimates with clear scopes. Separation of storm damage from pre-existing wear (adjusters look for this, and our documentation holds up because we're specific). We're happy to meet your adjuster on site and walk them through the damage. What we won't do is inflate numbers or play games — honest documentation gets claims paid; games get claims denied.
Our process
After a storm: call us and describe what you're seeing — photos help if it's safe to take them. We schedule emergency stabilization as fast as the roads and waterways allow. Once stable, we assess fully and give you a written repair plan with phasing and pricing. We coordinate with your insurance as needed. Then we rebuild — and where the storm showed us a weakness, we build it back stronger than it was. Every project is different — contact us for a free written estimate.
