Canal country, built for boats
Apollo Beach might be the most dock-dense community in Tampa Bay. The whole town is laced with man-made canals, and most waterfront homes have a seawall, a dock, and a boat — sometimes two. It's a boater's neighborhood through and through, from the quiet residential canals off Apollo Beach Boulevard to the open water near the Big Bend area.
Those canals shape every dock project here. Canal walls are typically concrete seawalls of varying age — some original to the 70s and 80s developments, some replaced. Water depth in the canals runs shallow to moderate, and the bottom is often soft dredge material, which means pilings need real depth to hold. We check every site at low tide before we design, because canal depth here can surprise you.
What Apollo Beach docks need
Seawall tie-in is the first thing we look at. Your dock has to connect to your wall cleanly, and if the wall is aging, the dock inherits its problems — we assess both together. Boat lifts are huge here; with so many center consoles and bay boats on lifts, we do a lot of lift installs and lift-bay retrofits on existing docks. And with the afternoon chop that funnels up the canals, cross-bracing isn't optional — it's what keeps a dock square.
Manatee zone awareness matters in these waters too. The warm-water outflows near the power station draw manatees in winter, and the whole area is speed-restricted. We design with that in mind — no floating debris hazards, clean lines, and construction scheduled to minimize disturbance.
